Samsung Electronics is expected to buy 6.5 million units of smartphone OLED panels from BOE and CSOT in China. This is eight times the total of 800,000 OLED units that Samsung purchased from the two companies last year.

Speaking at UBI Research’s 2022 OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) Korea Conference in Busan, Yasuo Nakane, a researcher at Mizuho Securities in Japan, said, “Samsung Electronics will sell 3.5 million and 300 OLED panels of OE LEDs and CSE, respectively, this year. Thousands of units are expected to be collected.

According to researcher Nakane (TheElec), Samsung plans to buy 155.5 million OLED panels for Galaxy smartphones this year. Currently, Samsung Display supplies 149 million units (96%). This is followed by BOE 3.5 million units (2%) and CSOT 3 million units (2%).

The total volume of 6.5 million units from BOE and CSOT was 8 times more than 800,000 units last year. Last year, Samsung Display was involved in the development of Samsung Electronics’ OLED for the BOE and CSOT 2022 model Galaxy A73.

Earlier last year, CSOT supplied OLED to older models of Samsung Electronics’ low-cost Galaxy M series being sold in the Indian market. This is the first time a company other than Samsung Display has supplied OLED panels for smartphones to Samsung.

Adding to this the researcher Nakane estimates that Apple iPhone OLED purchases will be 223 million units this year. This is 40 million more than 181.5 million last year. Samsung Display has the largest share of the iPhone OLED market this year with 137 million units (61%). It is followed by LG Display with 55 million units (25%) and BOE with 31 million units (14%).

Meanwhile, Samsung last year left Apple as the number one OLED smartphone market in the world. The gap in smartphone OLED panel purchases between Apple and Samsung will increase from 40.7 million units last year to 67.5 million units this year.
