Looking at Samsung, BOE aims to start 8th Gen IT OLED production

Like its tough competitors Samsung Display and LG Display, BOE also started planning to build the line in preparation to supply OLED panels to Apple for applications in IT products such as iPads tablets, and MacBook notebooks.

‘TheElec’ reportedly disclosed that BOE is planning to build a Gen 8.6 (2250x2600mm) IT OLED panel production line at its B16 factory in the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province, China.

The Chinese display panel maker is planning to have a production capacity of 15,000 substrates per month and start production near the end of 2024. BOE is planning to use a half-cut and horizontal deposition method for its Gen 8.5 substrate which can provide 96 units at a time on the line.

BOE was currently in talks with Japan’s Canon Tokki, the world’s largest deposition equipment maker, to develop the deposition equipment for Gen 8.6 half cut. However, the Chinese display giant is yet to request an initial slot for Canon Tokki to start production.

Two emission layers can increase the brightness of the panels and extend their life span as well. This makes them more optimal to use in tablets and PCs that are conventionally used for a longer duration than smartphones.

Meanwhile, BOE is currently busy testing the two-stack tandem OLED technology at its existing production line. Samsung has already initiated preparation for the production of Gen 8.5 OLED panels for Cupertino-based IT products along with its new organic OLEDs.

Using this Gen 8 glass substrate is more advantageous and economical for companies in manufacturing than these Gen 6 glass substrates. It looks like all the leading substrate makers are busy in their preparation for Gen 8 OLEDs. We will be bringing more on this whenever these new Gen 8 IT OLED panels are launched.
