Haesung Optics is a well-known manufacturer of Optics and OIS actuators, and its planning to supply a new camera module to Samsung Electronics which will be featured with new and improved OIS actuators. However, both are in indirect business relations for a long time.

‘TheElec’ has reportedly revealed that Haesung Optics is planning to supply ‘Sub’ a component for the OIS actuator of a smartphone camera module to Samsung Electronics.

What is this ‘sub’?

Here the ‘Sub’ refers to the OIS and autofocus (AF) actuator components that prevent the disruption caused due to handshake while clicking photos with the camera. If you block the up/down handshake, AF is actuated and if you block the left /right handshake the OIS function is implemented. The printed circuit board is equipped with the OIS assembly, AF carrier, ball guide, and a lens holder. Combining all these together the OIS actuator is completed.

The word ‘sub’ is commonly referred to in the industry as the sub-assembly process of combining the lenses together, which is the main process. Haesung Optics supplies the sub through MCNEX, and another camera module partnering along with Samsung Electronics to complete the OIS actuator. Haesung Optics is currently reviewing the specific sub-production facility and the investment scale.

Samsung Electronics is actively adopting the OIS function to all categories of smartphones, which was previously only to the selected ones, such as Galaxy S and Note. Samsung Electro-Mechanics accounted for around 90% of Haesung Optics and Haesung Optics is also expected to pursue the business direction of directly supplying the OIS actuators to Samsung in the long term.
