Samsung to foster Horizontal Work Culture

Published

on

Samsung Electronics is one of those South Korean companies who is been reforming honorifics or workplace titles. In the year 2016, Samsung has revamped its internal policy to add the Korean suffix “nim” to every employee’s name abolishing the titles such as “daeri” which means the assistant manager, and “bujang” which means team leader.

The ‘Korea Herald‘ report revealed that Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Han Jong-hee are seen speaking at the shareholder’s meeting held in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. While addressing the staff in the Digital eXperience division he said, “I will be asking you to call me ‘JH’ instead of ‘buhoejang-nim’ or ‘daepyo-nim’.”

Further, he told them to call him by the initials of his given name, rather than the honorific expressions for his job title, and to make it a common practice who follow a seniority-based work culture.

Adding more to it he said, ” Mutual respect to value everyone lays a foundation for the horizontal structure, which will lay the basis for our work culture.” This is a sign that Samsung is aggressively working on policies and productive work culture which encourages the talent to work at full throttle.

Why is Samsung taking such steps?

Under the Title “New Samsung” the Company may be trying to create a future-oriented work environment, in which Samsung will disallow employees from tracking how far their colleagues have been promoted.

It could also abolish the requirement of titles for the promotion of employees up to certain levels. Therefore the promotions could be based only on your caliber and skill, rather on referring for minimum terms of service.
