Samsung and Western Digital jointly develop next-gen Zoned Storage tech

Published

on

Recently, Samsung Electronics and Western Digital announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for their unique collaboration to standardize and drive the next generation of data placement, processing, and fabric (D2PF) storage technologies widely adopted.

These moves allow the industry to focus on the myriad applications that ultimately create greater value for consumers. This is the first time that both Samsung and Western Digital have come together to create a broader setting and promote awareness of complex storage technologies.

The partnership is expected to promote a wide range of collaborations around technology standardization and software development for D2PF technologies such as zoned storage, with a focus on enterprise and cloud applications.

With this collaboration, end-users can trust that these emerging storage technologies will have support from multiple device vendors as well as vertically integrated hardware and software companies.

Both companies have launched an initiative around zoned storage devices, including ZNS (Zoned Namespace) SSDs and SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) HDDs. Samsung and Western Digital define high-end models and frameworks for next-generation zoned storage technologies through organizations such as the SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) and the Linux Foundation.

Furthermore, this collaboration is expected to serve as a starting point for the expansion of zone-based (eg ZNS, SMR) device interfaces as well as the expansion of high-capacity storage devices with the future generation, advanced data placement, and processing technologies.
