Samsung’s global foundry revenue grew in 4Q21, narrowing gap with TSMC
According to a recent report by South Korean media suggest, Samsung Electronics expanded its share of the global foundry market in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap slightly with industry leader TSMC.
As per the report, the shares of South Korean chipmakers rose 1.1 percent to 18.3 percent during the October-December period, while major market player Taiwan’s TSMC fell to 52.1 percent from 1 percent, according to market analyst Trendforce.

The Samsung foundry business grew by 15.3 percent compared to the previous quarter, while the TSMC quarterly growth rate was 5.8 percent. The contract chipmaker Samsung was the only company in the industry to increase its market share year-on-year in the fourth quarter.
According to TrendForce, the attributed Samsung’s growth to “gradual completion of new advanced 5/4nm process capabilities and massive production of new flagship products from major client Qualcomm”.
During a conference call following the fourth-quarter earnings results in late January, Samsung reported record-high earnings for the quarter, without providing detailed statistics on its foundry business. Overall, the global output from the world’s top 10 foundries reached US $29.55 billion in the three months ended December, up 8.3 percent from the third quarter.
The industry is expected to continue its growth in the first quarter of this year, partly due to the rise in wafer prices. But the first-quarter growth rate will be slightly lower than the previous quarter as the Greater China region has more lunar New Year holidays and fewer foundations with annual maintenance work.
Samsung is set to build a new chip manufacturing plant in Taylor, Texas to expand its foundry business and increase chip production. Construction will begin sometime in the first quarter, with mass production set to begin at the end of 2024. And, TSMC is also building a plant in Arizona and is looking to build more plants in the U.S.

We are in October 2024 and Samsung is rolling out a new update for the Galaxy A33 5G smartphone, which brings the September 2024 security patch to improve system security and stability. The update is available for users in Brazil and the company will soon expand it to more countries.
September 2024 security update fixes several Samsung and Google vulnerabilities to make the device’s performance smoother. It includes 1 critical issue and 43 high-level ones for Google. One of these issues was already fixed in earlier updates, and another one doesn’t impact Galaxy devices.
In addition, Samsung is adding 23 of its fixes to improve security. These vulnerabilities are mainly related to My Files, Theme Center, One UI Home, Knox, and Dex. This update makes the smartphone more reliable, secure, and stable.
Users of Samsung Galaxy A33 5G are getting a September 2024 security update with One UI build version A336MUBSAEXI8. They will have to download a 262MB package to install the update. It is an initial rollout so it may take some hours or days to reach all models.
If you have received the notification of the update then install it now to get a bug-free experience. You can also check the update by visiting the Settings app on your smartphone and opening the Software Update section.
Now, click on the Download and install option. If any update is available, you can follow the on-screen instructions to install the update on your Galaxy smartphone.
Notably, the update is based on Android 14-based One UI 6.1. This device is eligible for the next major One UI update, One UI 7, based on Android 15. Samsung is going to release a stable One UI 7 in January 2025 along with the Galaxy S25 series. After its debut, Samsung will make its wider rollout for all eligible devices.

Samsung’s recent SmartThings update broke many Galaxy S10 and Note10 devices. Following the reports, the company pulled the update and apologized to consumers. A new release is also reportedly released through Galaxy Store.
Isn’t it too late?
The glitchy SmartThings update led many Galaxy users to lose their data for no reason. As soon as users installed the SmartThings update, their phone was stuck in the boot loop. There’s no solution but to factory reset the device through Recovery.
Samsung acknowledges the recent SmartThings update affected some Galaxy phones running Android 12. We have recently reported problems appearing on Galaxy phones such as the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 series.
Samsung revealed that it had stopped updating the SmartThings as soon as it became aware of the issue and working on a solution “as a matter of urgency.” If you have experienced any inconvenience, please contact your nearest service center.
Some Galaxy smartphones running Android 12-based One UI operating system, such as the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 series, have experienced a repeated boot error when updating to the latest version of the SmartThings app.
If you have an idea of factory reset through Recovery, you don’t need to visit the service center. Be aware that you would need to log in with the same Google Account that you were using before factory resetting the device.
Manual data wipe puts Google’s FRP lock for security purposes. In case you don’t have access to credentials, a service center visit is necessary. Samsung may have notified their repair partners to assist you nicely with seamless repairs.
