Samsung Display will use patents among aggressive OLED competitors

According to the latest report by Korean Media TheElec, Samsung Display will use its patent in a variety of ways amid aggressive competition in the mobile OLED field.

At the Samsung Electronics conference in the fourth quarter, Choi Kwan-Young, executive vice president of Samsung Display, said in response to a question by an analyst that the company “uses its patents in a variety of ways.”

And how the display panel maker is planning to respond to the expanding competition in the small and medium OLED market. Samsung Display is currently the largest manufacturer of mobile OLED panels with a wider margin than its competitors. And, Apple is one of its biggest customers, along with Samsung Electronics.

The other rivals LG Display and BOE are also looking at more orders from Cupertino using the panel on its iPhones. One of the individuals who know about this said that Samsung Display is not likely to file an immediate patent lawsuit against its competitors other than being the biggest seller in the mobile OLED field.

Patent lawsuits are usually filed one on top of the other and the compensation is traditionally proportional to the revenue figures. This means that Samsung Display will have to pay more if both parties infringe on each other’s patents.

However, South Korean performance manufacturers may use non-practicing entities (NPEs) such as surrogates to sue. Also if NPE sued Samsung Display rivals, they could protest, claiming that the patents were invalid. Samsung Display may also sue its rival component suppliers or distributors in the US for suppressing its competitors’ progress.
