Samsung and Vodafone make UK’s first 5G Open RAN call

In June last year, Samsung was selected as a leading Open RAN vendor for Vodafone to bring virtualized radio access networks (vRAN), and the latest 4G and 5G solutions to the United Kingdom (UK). Now the two companies have announced to switch on the UK’s first 5G Open RAN site that is located in Bath.

The companies also said that more than 2,500 sites will follow in the future. Samsung is currently providing network solutions to mobile operators that provide connectivity to hundreds of millions of users around the world. Now it is leading the successful delivery of 5G end-to-end solutions including chipsets, radios, and core.

Moving on, to commemorate the milestone, Andrea Donna – Vodafone UK Chief Network Officer had a video call with the UK’s Minister of Digital Infrastructure Julia Lopez earlier this month. This was the first video call using Samsung’s 5G virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN).

Moreover, Vodafone and Samsung will test Samsung VRAN’s telco-grade performance metrics in the future. It will also test some features, such as security, inter-radio access technology (inter-RAT) mobility, and inter-frequency handover, as well as ensure compliance with Open RAN specifications.

Samsung’s fully virtualized, software-based RAN runs on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers that offer features and performance comparable to traditional hardware-based devices. The cloud-native and container-based architecture used in vRAN enables more flexible and cost-effective 5G network deployment and better network management.

Samsung and Vodafone will also test other advanced network technologies in the first half of 2022. These technologies, such as Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) and E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) will take advantage of both LTE and 5G to help enhance the mobile user experience.

Samsung Galaxy S24 introduced the Galaxy AI‘s Instant Slow-mo feature with One UI 6.1. This feature uses on-device AI to create intermediate motion between frames, resulting in realistic and seamless transitions. Samsung has now expanded Instant Slow-mo support for 480×480 24fps videos.

With the April 2024 update for the Galaxy S24 series, the Instant Slow-mo feature gets enhanced as it is now supporting 480×480 24fps videos. This powerful tool makes creating and sharing high-quality slow-mo videos on social media easier than ever.

Instant Slow-mo feature plays the captured videos 4 times slower by creating a new game during each movement through AI frame rate conversion technology. It requires no separate settings when shooting. This feature transforms ordinary videos into cinematic slow-motion masterpieces.

This feature is now available on the Galaxy S23 series except S23 FE, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series along with the Galaxy S24 series.

AI Frame Rate Conversion

The AI Frame Rate Conversion (AI FRC) technology begins by analyzing every two frames of the original video, extracting motion information to interpolate new frames that slow down the action.

This process is repeated in both forward and reverse directions to enhance the accuracy of newly created additional frames. The Fusion Map and Residual processes then work in pairs to detect motion differences and apply additional corrections for smoother motion and sharp details.

Samsung Galaxy Enhance-X app is getting a new update for Android 14 Galaxy devices. Identified via version 2.0.71, the update brings improvements and bug fixes to enhance device performance.

The fresh update improves the app’s functions and addresses issues reported by users to ensure a more efficient and error-free experience. It is expected to enhance the stability and performance of the app.

Samsung revives ‘Since last charge’ feature for enhanced battery tracking

One UI 6.1 Battery last charge feature

Samsung has updated its Device Care app to version 13.8.6.11, which brings back the “since last charge” feature for its Galaxy smartphones. It was removed from Galaxy devices in the One UI 6 update. This function allows users to monitor their device’s battery performance and screen usage time since the last full charge.

According to the tipster Tarunvats, the return of the “since last charged” feature is due to user demand as it provides an accurate review of battery life. This feature is more informative than previous 24-hour tracking systems, which did not consider charging periods.
