It’s been a long time since the Samsung Galaxy S II hit the market. The smartphone is still famous and is being loved among its users. It came pre-installed with Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” and later upgraded to Android 4.1.2 “Jelly Bean”. Although its official upgrade cycle ends with Android 4, it has managed to taste the latest Android 12 OS.

Yes, the Samsung Galaxy S II has received the Android 12 update, it’s unofficial though. Thanks to XDA Developers, who have taken a significant step in continuing the device’s legacy by successfully booting an Android 12 based LineageOS 19.0 ROM on it.

LineageOS is an open-source Android custom operating system for smartphones and tablets. Developers usually take advantage of the open-source nature of custom ROMs and extend Android OS support for devices. And, that’s exactly what happened with the Galaxy S II. This smartphone has now grabbed LineageOS 19.0 build on top of Android 12.

Samsung Galaxy S II users can take advantage of all new features and changes of Android 12. On the other hand, they will also have access to LineageOS 19.0 functionalities. According to XDA, most of the core hardware components, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and audio output are working fine.

In addition, the cellular radio is also functioning, meaning you can flash a ROM to the device and technically use it as a backup phone, provided your carrier hasn’t completely phased out 3G yet. Last but not least, SELinux is set as implemented in the release.

When considering what is the reason why one should not download this update, these are the video recording features and the camera crashing after one use. However, the developers are continuously working on further improvements.
