Some dangerous Showbox-based apps surfaced on Samsung’s Galaxy Store
Recently, some malicious apps have been identified in the Samsung Galaxy Store. These apps were discovered by Android Police. To be more precise, many Showbox movie piracy app clones have been discovered. As many of you know, the Galaxy Store is basically a Samsung alternative to the Play Store.
It’s been a long time coming and you can download apps from it to your Samsung smartphone. In any case, if you try to install any Showbox-based apps that you have seen from the source, the Google Play Protect alert will pop up. The source also said that the warning could not be triggered without a reason.
Even more worrying is that some of these apps may have asked for unexpected permissions. It’s always a great sign that something went wrong. Some of them asked for access to contacts, call logs, etc.
After consulting linuxct, an Android security analyst, it was discovered that these apps may not contain malware. However, they can execute dynamic code, so they can download and execute other code containing malware.
The source has not tested the apps further to see if they are doing any harm, but it is worrying. The Showbox has been closed for almost two years now, which makes things even more suspicious.
This is not surprising considering the time of year, but we recommend that you stay away from such apps until Samsung clears things. However, it is very easy for a company to remove those apps.
