Emoji 15.1 introduced for Android and iOS devices: 118 new emojis coming

Emoji 15.1 is the latest set of emojis approved by the Unicode Consortium, the organization that regulates the text encoding standard used by most digital devices. The latest version of Emoji adds 118 new emojis, including six new concepts, four new family combinations, and 108 new directions for six existing people emojis. These new emojis are expected to appear on various platforms in the first half of the next year.
All of these new emojis are created by combining existing emoji characters or sequences with a special character called a zero-width joiner (ZWJ). This allows for new designs without adding new characters to the Unicode Standard.
Emoji 15.1 is the first update to the Unicode Standard that does not introduce any new emoji characters since Unicode 12.1 in 2019. However, Unicode 15.1 does add several hundred new non-emoji characters to the standard. The total number of emojis recommended by Unicode is now 3,782.
