Samsung, the world’s largest memory company and mobile phone maker, is approaching the selection of its new plant site in the United States, as competition intensified in the semiconductor industry amidst global chip shortages.

Recently, Lee Jae-Yong, deputy chairman of the tech giant, is expected to visit the US early next week to complete the company’s $17 billion investment project.

Samsung has vowed to strengthen its presence in the established industry, or in chip contracts, and logic businesses in an effort to expand its position in the markets controlled by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) Ltd and Intel respectively.

Late last month, the company set out its vision to increase its launch capacity by three times the 2017 rate. The company said its established business sent record money for the three months ending September, without disclosing any sales or profit figures.

He said the chip contract production phase “is expected to continue to deliver strong results in the” fourth quarter “by gaining technical leadership through the 3-nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process and meeting the need for active investment.”

The city of Taylor in Texas, with a population of about 18,000, has already become one of the strongest areas for this new plant. It has provided the tech giant with a set of incentives, including tax rebates, for a project that is expected to bring thousands of jobs and opportunities.

According to a resolution passed by Taylor City Council, the 6 billion chip factory, if built, is expected to produce the “most advanced” semiconductor type. Samsung has left some options open, saying other areas, such as Phoenix in Arizona, northern New York, and Manor in Texas near Austin were being considered.
