Samsung foldable dominance may be forcing Google to cancel Pixel Fold plans
Google had been rumored to be launching the Pixel foldable before the end of the year. Now, DSSC chief executive Ross Young says the fold has been canceled and is not expected to be seen in the future.
Quoting the supply chain sources, Young says Google will not bring the Pixel Fold to market by the end of the year as expected previously. Release in 2022 is also not possible, with the first half of the year being released yet.
With Android 12L coming to market soon, it would make sense for Google to schedule a hardware launch to keep up with it – as it did with previous Android releases. That obviously does not happen. Referring to the supply chain sources, Young says Google does not think the Pixel Fold will compete with the Galaxy Z Fold or the Galaxy Z Flip in the US and Europe.
Young points out that China has a long way to go, with companies like Huawei and Xiaomi working on their own. But Google just can’t compete when successfully with its service is blocked.
It is true that foldables remain a niche market, and Google has yet to emerge from the standard smartphone market with older smartphones. Google would not be alone in supporting Samsung if it came down to this market.

TCL also withdrew from the competition in the telecommunications market when it faced the 800-pound Samsung gorilla. While it is undoubtedly a missed opportunity when the fold becomes bigger in the future, it is hard to blame Google.
