New Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces lets developers create immersive AR experiences

On November 09, T-Mobile announced that it has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to provide a unique 5G connection to Qualcomm’s new virtual reality (XR) initiative. This includes the recently announced Snapdragon Spaces platform, an XR tool kit intended to make it easier for developers to pursue augmented-reality (AR) projects.

That is an attempt to empower new Qualcomm’s AR Glasses projects, hoping to be the next big thing in the mobile space. Qualcomm’s vision here is that with the ever-wearing accessories – whether that’s a real headset or a few simple mirrors – users can “automatically see and hear important content in context” through a hands-free interface.

Other partners in the project include Niantic, which has its recently announced metaverse-focused development program called Lightship, and Lenovo, which plans to relocate to an AR open space with its ThinkReality A3 mirrors next year.

That list now includes T-Mobile. In addition to providing its 5G network, T-Mobile has launched its Accelerator program for beginners planning to create AR/XR programs via Snapdragon Spaces. Applications for the fall of 2021 are currently closed.

In addition, T-Mobile recently announced T-Challenge, an international competition created in partnership with German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom to challenge developers to create XR tools and information that will enhance customer experience. The winning idea can take the grand prize of 75,000 euros, while the solutions presented are worth winning the first prize of 150,000 euros.
