Samsung Android 12L improves system UI to take full advantage of multitasking in Galaxy Z Fold 3

Recently, Google announced the new version of Android, Android 12L, which aims to create a structure with Android 12 on large screen devices (via Google Developers). It is mainly intended for tablets and foldables, but Chromebook users will benefit from it.
The forthcoming “feature fall” add-on to Android 12L brings improvements to the multitasking and usability of these great devices and, thanks to the emulator, we can see what those changes will look like in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 form and that the Android 12L Activity taskbar works.
One of the first things Android 12L should look like with its notification/quick settings, adding a separate layout to this update. Interestingly, this only applies to the Fold 3 display when rotated in place.
What’s new in Android 12L?
- Powerful and intuitive multitasking
- More updates and resources for large screens
Try your apps on 12L and optimize for the next wave of large-screen devices!
Android 12L Multitasking
In both cases, however, we can see Google’s multitasking enhancements. A new multi-tasking screen displays one app in the main view with the new “Split” shortcut below, and other apps are displayed on the 4 × 4 left grid of that one app.
The split-screen mode is also tied to the device line on Android 12L. When Fold 3 is in Portrait mode, windows can only be stacked on top of each other, and in Landscape mode, it only works side by side. This is in stark contrast to Samsung’s approach to the One UI which allows for any option in any way.
In another way, opening split-screen (or in multi-window mode) and gestures as drag and drop are beginning to become a natural interaction that users expect to work seamlessly on their devices on the big screen.
Your apps should handle most of the work seamlessly with the extension. Managing folding and unfolding events and setting your app in multi-window mode prevents your app from having a mailbox.
We also saw a new Android 12L taskbar, allowing users to hold apps in the bar and drag themselves into screen split mode without leaving their current app. Even this sounds more accurate than anything in Android today, not even a single UI.
Interestingly, that there is no way to turn off the work bar going on in the current 12L mode. Obviously, this is due to a bug that Google is aware of in the 12L emulator version. The taskbar on Android 12L also works in a different way than you might expect. Instead of having a custom dock, just view the dock on your homescreen, limited to only 5 apps. Android 12L will be upgraded in the next few months with a full release in the first half of 2022.

Samsung opts out of Android 16 Beta Program amid growing One UI 8 leak

Despite having Android at its core, Samsung’s One UI doesn’t join Google’s Beta Program. This year, no surprise: Samsung has skipped Google’s Android 16 Beta list, which is joined by many rivaling brands like Xiaomi.
Google has recently released Android 16 Beta 4 for Pixel phones. It comes as the second Platform Stability release, which is almost as stable as the official release. Google also announced compatible apps can now be listed on the Play Store.
However, Samsung’s decision to skip Google’s Beta aligns with its history of focusing on One UI. This approach lets the company “personally” refine its software, though it means Galaxy users wait longer for Android 16 previews.
Android 16 Beta is now available on various devices from brands including Google, iQOO, Lenovo, OnePlus, Sharp, Oppo, Realme, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. The new OS is available on top of the previous version of their respective custom skins.

Samsung will bring Android 16 to Galaxy devices as part of One UI 8. Other Android OEMs also have their custom skins based on Android, but they usually join Google’s Android Beta Program ahead of their own skin’s testing.
While Android 16 is getting ready for official release, Samsung has also shifted gears and has been internally testing the One UI 8. This new iteration will be unveiled with the next-gen foldables this year, and we’ve got plenty of leaks.
One UI 8 could be a minor upgrade in comparison to One UI 7. Key interface aspects will remain similar, but we would see design tweaks across system apps such as Samsung Gallery, My Files, and Quick Share. Here’s more on One UI 8:

Android 16 Beta 4 drops today, but Samsung’s Android 15 rollout still on hold

Google is set to release Android 16 Beta 4 in the next few hours. Pixel users will receive this update as the first big OTA after the OS reached Platform Stability. Meanwhile, Samsung has yet to resume the Android 15 rollout for Galaxy devices.
With the third Beta, Android 16 hit the Platform Stability milestone. Now, the next Beta updates won’t bring major changes that affect apps and the ecosystem. That said, the operating system is now getting the finishing touches before public release.
Google aims to release Android 16 as soon as June this year. The rollout may begin shortly after the I/O 2025 event, bringing it a quarter ahead from the past years. Samsung is confirmed to be the first beneficiary of this release timeline shift.
Android 15 was officially released on October 15, 2024. It’s been around one and a half years, yet Samsung users are waiting for the upgrade. The rollout was commenced on April 7 but was put on hold due to some serious lock screen issues.
While users are awaiting Android 15, Samsung is already working on Android 16. The next One UI update won’t bring major changes but will focus on refining the user interface with subtle tweaks and functional improvements.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 will launch with Android 16-based One UI 8. The new foldables would be the first to come pre-installed with the new OS. Android OEMs like Xiaomi and Oppo/Vivo would also follow the pursuit.
