New Samsung patent suggests Galaxy Z Fold 4 could use double sided fingerprint sensor

Published

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Patent

No doubt, Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a very high-profile foldable smartphone to date. However, it lacks a very common feature, which is an under-screen fingerprint scanner. This can be attributed to the phone’s unconventional plastic-glass hybrid screen.

Well, a new patent document from Samsung suggests that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable phone may be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint recognition sensor. Recently, LetsGoDigital found a Samsung patent on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which revealed a double-sided fingerprint sensor.

Essentially, the fingerprint sensors will be located between the cover screen and the main screen. However, the cover screen uses a traditional AMOLED panel, it should not have trouble verifying fingerprints like other smartphones. Adding to this, the two sensors will interface with the mainboard through a PCB.

It will be interesting to see what tricks Samsung uses to make the fingerprint sensor on the secondary display play its role. Although the patent is not explicitly listed, Samsung may mix things up and use a combination of ultrasonic and optical fingerprint sensors.

The cover display can use the former, and the main screen can use the latter. The optical fingerprint sensor on the main screen will be easy to calibrate, although it may take several iterations to perfect. Various reviews of Galaxy Z Fold 3 revealed that the side-mounted fingerprint sensor is doing very well.

No doubt, the Korean tech giant has no reason to switch to optical/ultrasonic alternative technology, but this will help distinguish the Galaxy Z Fold 4 from its predecessors, and it will also become the world’s first folding-screen phone to adopt this technology.
