Google bringing big Android 11 feature to phones with Android 6 to 10
Released back in September last year, Google’s Android 11 operating system brings significant changes to the users’ privacy thanks to enhanced privacy features. However, the company is going to release the new version of its mobile OS sometime in October, consumers with eligible smartphones are very excited.
Meanwhile, there’s very big news coming from Google as it’s going to make an Android 11 feature compatible with all the previous OS versions including Android 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. According to the official blog post, the US tech giant has decided to make Permissions auto-reset feature available to billions of more devices.
Permissions auto‑reset
Permissions auto‑reset is an Android 11 exclusive feature to date but things will be changed next year. When enabled, if you haven’t used an app in a while, you may not want it to keep accessing your data. So Android will reset permissions for your unused apps, at the same time, you can always turn permissions back on. [Source]
When will Permissions Auto Delete feature come?
According to Google, the cross-platform auto-reset APIs are now in beta (Jetpack Core 1.7.0 beta library), so developers can start using these APIs. Though their use is safe even on devices that don’t support permission auto-reset (the API will return FEATURE_NOT_AVAILABLE on these devices).
In October, the cross-platform auto-reset APIs become available as stable APIs (Jetpack Core 1.7.0).
Starting December 2021, Google will gradually release the Permissions auto-reset feature across devices powered by Google Play Services that run a version between Android 6.0 and Android 10. Following the rollout, users will have to make some changes in the settings:
- Go to the auto-reset settings page
- Enable/disable auto-reset for specific apps
After enabling Permissions auto-reset feature, the system will start to automatically reset the permissions of unused apps a few weeks after the feature installs on a device.
January-March 2022 – The permission auto-reset feature will reach all devices running a version between Android 6.0 and Android 10.

Biden rushes CHIPS Act deals ahead of Trump’s presidency
Samsung is trying to secure CHIPS Act subsidies before Donald Trump takes charge. Joe Biden introduced CHIPS and Science Act to boost semiconductor business on American soil. However, the President-elect is a big critic of the CHIPS Act.
Bloomberg reports that the Biden administration is rushing to finalize CHIPS Act agreements with Intel and Samsung. Notably, Samsung and Intel are set to receive direct subsidies of $6.4 billion and $8.5 billion, respectively.
During his election campaign, President-elect Trump heavily mocked the CHIPS and Science Act. It is expected that Trump could put tariff on semiconductor manufacturers and nullify subsidies before disbursment.
Concerns have arisen that semiconductor companies, which have invested heavily in the U.S. over the past four years, might not receive subsidies, or that U.S. companies like Intel could be prioritized.
Intel is an American company, which could be unaffected by Trump’s presidency. As the President-elect prefers an “America First” policy, it’s an alarming situation for Samsung Electronics, which bases its headquarters in South Korea.
Since the CHIPS and Science Act is considered a key industrial policy of the Biden administration, this move is seen as an effort to finalize binding contracts and distribute promised subsidies before the administration changes.
