Samsung introduces innovative TV Block Function to supports vendors affected by thievery

Recently, Samsung South Africa has announced the launch of the Television Block Function on all Samsung TVs. The blocking system is intended to be used in connection with televisions obtained by users illegally and in some cases, stolen from Samsung’s storage.

The ‘Samsung TV Block Function’ is a remote, secure solution that detects if the Samsung TV units have been compromised, and ensures that the television sets can only be used by the appropriate owners with valid proof of purchase.

The purpose of this technology is to reduce the creation of secondary markets linked to the sale of illegal goods, in South Africa and beyond. This technology is pre-installed in all Samsung TV products.

Samsung is committed to reopening businesses and reducing job losses, in line with the #RebuildSouthAfrica application. With this in mind, Samsung has used the TV Block on all Samsung stolen televisions at our Cato Ridge distribution center in KZN since 11 July 2021.

Samsung TV Block Function operates as follows:

  • A TV blocking system has been activated on Samsung television sets stolen from our warehouse.
  • The blocking will come into effect when the user of a stolen television connects to the internet, in order to operate the television.
  • Once connected, the serial number of the television is identified on the Samsung server and the blocking system is implemented, disabling all the television functions.
  • This ensures that these television sets can only be used by rightful owners with a valid proof of purchase
  • Should a customer’s TV be incorrectly blocked, the functionality can be reinstated once proof of purchase and a valid TV license is shared to serv.manager@samsung.com, or click here for more information.
