Earlier today, Samsung Display officially announced that it has successfully developed a low-power smartphone OLED panel that reduces power consumption by 25%. The company also said that this display debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 foldable smartphone on August 11.

According to the news, the South Korean tech giant’s new-generation OLED panel is named “Eco OLED”. The laminated structure of the screen that blocks the reflection of external light can replace the “polarizer” to reduce the power consumption of the panel by 25% and increase the light transmittance by 33%.

In simple words, when light passes through the polarizer, the brightness will drop by more than 50%, resulting in poor light efficiency. That’s why Samsung Display has internalized the external light reflection function of the polarizer for the first time alongside improving the light efficiency of the panel.

Notably, the Samsung Display official said that Eco OLED technology was first applied to the foldable display on Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 3, and it also contributed to the application of UPC (under panel camera) technology.

The South Korean display giant pointed out that as the light transmittance of the display increases, it can provide more light to the camera module in the panel, thereby ensuring the application of UPC technology.
