Samsung made Tensor chip for Google Pixel 6?: Yesterday, Google unexpectedly announced its new flagship smartphone lineup called the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. As rumored these devices are equipped with the company’s own developed (custom-made) processor named “Tensor”.
According to NikkeiAsia report, Google did not disclose who will manufacture the Tensor chip for Pixel, but sources familiar with the matter revealed that Samsung is handling the Tensor production using its advanced 5-nanometer process technology.
By declining to comment on the matter, last week, the Korean tech giant said that it plans to accelerate its foundry business this year, with a focus on 5- and 4-nanometer processes. The company uses its 5nm tech to develop Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 SoC, which comes with Galaxy S21, Xiaomi Mi 11 series and so on.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai Tweeted on Monday that the Tensor mobile chip is an effort “4 yrs in the making.” Google shares closed up 0.6%.

Adding to this Sundar also disclosed that Tensor builds off of our 2 decades of computing experience and it’s our biggest innovation in Pixel to date. However, Google didn’t reveal technical specifications for its new processor but it could help bring “entirely new features, plus improvements to existing ones to Pixel 6 users.
Previously, Google had shaken hands with chip designer Broadcom to manufacture the tensor processing unit for its mega data center servers. The US tech giant has been using TPUs in its data center for over five years, to accelerate the computing of customized AI algorithms.
