Samsung Display developing next-generation prototype QNED display tech: UBI Research

Published

on

On July 30th, UBI Research made an announcement when Samsung Display‘s QNED core patent was disclosed. The UBI Research, a market research company, evaluated, “The next-generation display that Samsung Display is developing, QNED – Quantum dot Nano-rod LED, is the best display in terms of structure.”

According to UBI Research, QNED is a nanorod LED pixel layer on top of the thin film transistor (TFT) of 3T1C (transistor 3, capacitor 1) used by the large organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and quantum dots (QD), and color filters (CF). Lay the color conversion layers one after the other.

In OLED, the electrodes (cathode and anode) and wiring that transmit signals to the pixel are located on the upper and lower sides of the light-emitting material, whereas in QNED, both the signal transmitting electrode (pixel electrode) and wiring are located on the same plane.

In addition to the pixel electrode, the QNED has a separate reflective electrode for improving light output efficiency. The pixel electrode also serves as an electrode that aligns the nanorod LED.

Driving and sensing are the core technologies of QNED

The driving technology includes technology for aligning nanorod LEDs and technology for uniformly controlling pixels due to a deviation in the number of nanorod LEDs.

Sensing technology includes sensing technology (sensing transistor) designed inside QNED and sensing technology required for QNED manufacturing. The sensing technology used to manufacture QNEDs is inherent in inkjet systems.

UBI Research introduced sensing transistors, wiring, and signals that can check the alignment status of nanorod LEDs on the panel in the self-published ‘QNED Technology Completeness Analysis Report’.

They also added that QNED is the only large display that uses QD to have excellent color gamut, HDR, luminance, contrast ratio, motion blur, and other characteristics, and to realize image quality satisfactory to Samsung Electronics.

galaxy s23 update LTE support Europe

Following the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung is rolling out a new firmware update with enhanced LTE band support for the Galaxy S23 series in Europe. It is a region-specific update and aims to improve the network for a better user experience.

Users of Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphones are getting the second April 2024 update in Europe with One UI build version S911BXXU3CXD3, S916BXXU3CXD3, and S918BXXU3CXD3 respectively.

WHAT’S NEW

The new firmware of the Samsung Galaxy S23 in Europe updates the Regional LTE TDD band support to provide better network performance across various European countries.

Notably, there’s a limitation for German users. Galaxy S24 models bought in Germany will not support LTE TDD band signals in certain countries, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.

Users can check new software updates manually with a handful of simple steps. Firstly, visit your Galaxy device’s “System Settings,” once done, scroll down and tap the “Software update” tab, followed by the “Download and install” button.

Samsung Galaxy AI

Hearing heavy demands from consumers, Samsung announced the Phase 2 expansion of Galaxy AI and One UI 6.1. Under the next phase, all flagship devices released in 2022 will be upgraded to Samsung’s One UI 6.1 software, which also introduces Galaxy AI features.

Samsung itself confirmed One UI 6.1 with Galaxy AI coming to 2022 flagships in Phase 2. In case you are wondering about even broad expansion, we believe it is unlikely due to hardware limitations. Flagships from 2021 are unlikely to get Galaxy AI, which One UI 6.1 would be offered.

Samsung Phase 2 Expansion of One UI 6.1 & Galaxy AI

Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra will get One UI 6.1 with Galaxy AI. In addition, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are also eligible. The company will offer the same treatment to the Galaxy Tab S9 trio, which includes Standard, Plus, and Ultra models.

As far as the release date is concerned, it’s scheduled to begin in May 2024. Once initiated, the South Korean tech giant will gradually expand its availability internationally. Models that are ineligible for Galaxy AI may start getting One UI 6.1 enhancements.
