Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3′ cases to protect hinge against drops and bumps

Back in October 2020, Samsung filed a new patent entitled – ‘Protective cover for foldable electronic device’ at the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), which was approved and published on April 29, 2021. This new protective case design patent shows different options for protecting the hinge against drops and bumps.

According to the patent document (via LetsGoDigital), the South Korean tech giant got approval for three different phone cases. Two of them are made of tough material while the third case is made of a flexible soft fabric. However, all of these cases bring protection for the hinge, and the cover consists of one piece.

Despite the outer side of the folding smartphone becomes larger in the unfolded condition, it is in all cases necessary for the cover to be able to contract and expand at the height of the hinge. While the company has chosen hard construction and a curved surface around the hinge, it has also applied a kind of flexible flap to the fabric cover.

Samsung also intends to make a crop for the dual camera and the cover display, which is described in the documentation. Besides, the additional recesses can be made for the buttons and sensors. It’s worth mentioning that the company has designed a Leather Cover for the Galaxy Z Flip, which offers no protection around the hinge.

Now, Samsung seems to work on various solutions to manufacture foldable covers that bring better protection to its upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 3. At the same time, it becomes clear from the 36-page documentation that Samsung can also use a similar solution for the covers of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
