New Samsung Galaxy Flip patent shows dual punch-hole camera, in-display fingerprint sensor
Samsung is known as the market leader in terms of foldable screen smartphones. As of now, the company has two types of folding phones – Galaxy Fold 2 that folds out into a large tablet, and the Galaxy Z Flip is a clamshell-type folding phone.
Although, it looks like Samsung is working on a new clamshell-type folding smartphone that can fold not only inward direction but also in the outward direction. This type of handset needs a large cover display as this info has also arrived from a new patent.
Back in October 2020, Samsung applied for a new patent called ‘Apparatus and method for illumination of camera in electronic device’ at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and this 68-page document was recently published on April 15, 2021.
According to LetsGoDigital, the design patent revealed a clamshell phone with a Galaxy Z Flip-like display. The patent also suggests that this device can be foldable in two directions as the hinge is redesigned for this functionality.
When folded, the flexible screen is not affected by the outside. If you bend the device in other ways, you can access the larger screens on the front and back. Besides, you can use the phone in a fully open position and then use the full flexible screen.
Furthermore, the Korean phone maker has also picked a dual punch-hole camera for this design. When implementing a punch-hole camera, it is not possible to integrate a flash for safety reasons, as described in the documentation. Instead, the company wants to use the light emitted by the display.
Aside from this, the patent document also talks about an in-display fingerprint sensor. It is worth mentioning that currently there are no foldable smartphones available where the fingerprint scanner is processed under the screen.
Lastly, it is not confirmed whether Samsung will implement the double punch-hole camera and an in-display fingerprint sensor in its folding smartphones. Meanwhile, the company is rapidly working on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 2/3 that will be launched around July this year.

Samsung has slightly changed the aspect ratio of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This results in changes in the middle frame, and ditches the curved edges, indicating a flat display design. In the video below, you can see the transformation of the S23 Ultra into the upcoming S24 Ultra device.

As you can see in the comparison renders, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has an almost flat design as compared to its predecessor. The company has already reduced the curvature with the S23 Ultra this year, and it’s going to be flat, starting with the S24 Ultra next year.

The new flat frame is a significant design overhaul that Samsung enthusiasts will see with the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus. On the front, there is a tiny punch-hole design consisting of the selfie snapper sensor, while the rear three cameras are placed vertically on the top left panel.
